Calculate your freelance net earnings after platform fees, business expenses, and estimated taxes with our free freelance earnings calculator. Enter your income, costs, estimated tax rate, and hours worked to see how much you actually earn.
The calculator shows your earnings before estimated tax, net income after entered deductions, and effective hourly earnings. All results are based on your own inputs. Estimated taxes are illustrative and do not represent verified tax obligations.
Freelance Net Earnings Calculator
Subtract your own platform fees, business expenses and an optional estimated tax rate from revenue. No tax rate or earnings amount is assumed.
Tax is a user-entered planning assumption, applied only to positive revenue after entered fees and expenses. This does not determine your legal tax liability or deductions. Results may be negative.
How Does the Freelance Earnings Calculator Work?
Our freelance earnings calculator helps freelancers estimate how much income remains after platform fees, business expenses, and an estimated tax deduction.
Enter your gross revenue, platform or payment processing fees, business expenses, estimated tax rate, and total hours worked. The calculator shows your earnings before estimated tax, estimated net income, and effective net hourly earnings.
Freelance Net Income Calculation Example
Suppose a freelancer earns $5,000 in monthly revenue, pays $500 in platform fees, spends $1,000 on business expenses, and enters an illustrative 20% tax rate.
| Income and Expenses | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross Revenue | $5,000 |
| Platform Fees | $500 |
| Business Expenses | $1,000 |
| Earnings Before Estimated Tax | $3,500 |
| Estimated Tax (20%) | $700 |
| Estimated Net Earnings | $2,800 |
How Is Freelance Net Income Calculated?
Step 1: Subtract platform fees and business expenses from gross revenue.
$5,000 – $500 – $1,000 = $3,500.
Step 2: Apply the entered estimated tax rate to the positive balance.
$3,500 x 20% = $700.
Step 3: Subtract estimated tax from earnings before tax.
$3,500 – $700 = $2,800.
The freelancer’s estimated net earnings in this example are $2,800.
How to Calculate Your Effective Freelance Hourly Rate
Your effective hourly earnings can differ significantly from your advertised hourly rate because platform fees, business expenses, and unpaid work reduce your actual earnings.
To calculate your effective net hourly earnings, divide estimated net income by the total hours worked.
Example: $2,800 / 100 hours = $28 per hour.
For a more useful estimate, include time spent on client communication, revisions, administration, and other unpaid business tasks in your total working hours.
What Expenses Should Freelancers Include?
Depending on your business, common expenses may include software subscriptions, website hosting, equipment, marketing, internet services, professional services, and payment processing fees.
Enter each cost only once. For example, if you include payment processing charges under platform fees, do not enter the same charges again under business expenses.
Does This Calculator Determine Your Actual Taxes?
No. The estimated tax rate is entered by the user and is applied to the positive balance after the specified fees and expenses. The calculator does not determine taxable income under any particular jurisdiction’s rules.
Actual tax obligations may depend on your location, filing status, deductible expenses, self-employment taxes, and other factors. The 20% rate in the example is illustrative, not a recommended or verified tax rate.
Use the results for financial planning scenarios rather than as a tax return calculation or a guarantee of take-home income.
