Affiliate Commission Calculator

Calculate commissions from your own sale price and agreed commission rate. No assumed platform fees or rates.

Commission after entered expenses (before taxes) — Enter your values and click Calculate Commission.

Assumptions: all orders have the same sale amount and commission percentage; returned or ineligible orders receive no commission. Entered expenses are deducted once. Taxes, tiered rates, attribution rules, foreign-exchange fees, payout thresholds, and other unentered adjustments are excluded. A negative result means expenses exceed calculated commissions. This is a scenario calculation, not a guaranteed payout.

How to Calculate Affiliate Commission

Affiliate commission is the amount you earn when qualifying purchases are attributed to your affiliate referrals. Your earnings depend on the sale value, commission rate, number of eligible orders, and the rules of the affiliate program.

Quick answer: Multiply eligible sales revenue by the commission rate to calculate gross commission. Then subtract any applicable expenses to estimate how much remains before taxes.

The EarnLookup Affiliate Commission Calculator lets you enter your own commission rate instead of relying on potentially outdated or incorrect platform averages.

Affiliate Commission Formula

For a percentage-based commission model:

Gross Commission = Eligible Sales Revenue × (Commission Rate ÷ 100)

When all orders have the same value:

Eligible Sales Revenue = Sale Amount per Order × (Total Orders − Returned or Ineligible Orders)

To calculate the amount remaining after expenses:

Commission After Expenses = Gross Commission − Additional Expenses

These formulas apply to the values entered into this calculator. Actual affiliate programs may use different rules, including product-specific rates, commission caps, exclusions, and partial refunds.

How to Use the Affiliate Commission Calculator

  1. Sale amount per order (USD): Enter the commissionable value of one order.
  2. Number of orders: Enter the total number of attributed orders.
  3. Commission rate (%): Enter the percentage specified by your affiliate program.
  4. Returned / ineligible orders: Enter the number of orders that do not qualify for commission.
  5. Additional expenses (USD): Enter advertising, software, or other costs you want to deduct.
  6. Click Calculate Commission to see the results.

The calculator displays eligible sales revenue, gross commission, entered expenses, and the remaining amount before taxes.

Affiliate Commission Calculation Example

Suppose an affiliate promotes a product with a commissionable sale value of $100.

The affiliate records 50 orders, but five are returned or otherwise ineligible. The program pays a 10% commission, and the affiliate has spent $50 on campaign expenses.

Calculation Result
Sale amount per order $100
Total orders 50
Returned or ineligible orders 5
Eligible orders 45
Eligible sales revenue $4,500
Commission rate 10%
Gross commission $450
Additional expenses $50
Commission after expenses $400

The remaining $400 is the result of this example calculation, not necessarily the affiliate’s finalized payment or accounting profit.

All values are illustrative and do not represent the standard commission rate of any particular affiliate platform.

Gross Affiliate Commission vs. Commission After Expenses

Gross commission represents the amount calculated from eligible sales before subtracting the additional expenses entered into the tool.

Commission after expenses shows how much of that commission remains after the specified costs.

Why Expenses Matter

Affiliate marketing can involve costs even when the affiliate does not purchase or ship the products.

These may include paid advertising, website hosting, email marketing software, content production, and tracking tools.

For example, earning $300 in gross commission while spending $350 on qualifying campaign expenses produces a negative $50 result.

The calculator correctly displays negative amounts when expenses exceed gross commission.

Is Commission After Expenses the Same as Net Profit?

Not necessarily.

The calculator subtracts only the expenses entered by the user. It does not automatically account for taxes, exchange-rate adjustments, payment-processing deductions, or other unentered costs.

For accurate business reporting, affiliates should reconcile calculated amounts with their approved transactions, statements, and actual expenses.

How Do Refunds Affect Affiliate Commissions?

Not every tracked order becomes a payable affiliate transaction.

Depending on the program agreement, commissions may be rejected or reversed when purchases are returned, canceled, fraudulent, duplicated, or otherwise ineligible.

For example, impact.com documents commission adjustments and reversals involving returned or canceled orders. Tapfiliate also documents processes for voiding commissions when conversions are invalidated.

These rules are program-specific. Affiliates should check the applicable contract rather than assume that every tracked conversion will be paid.

Returned Orders vs. Partial Refunds

Our current calculator removes an entire order when it is entered as returned or ineligible.

A partial refund may require reducing the commissionable amount rather than excluding the entire order. This version does not calculate partial refunds individually.

For orders with different sale values or commission rates, calculate each group separately and combine the eligible results.

Percentage-Based vs. Fixed Affiliate Commissions

Affiliate programs can use different payment structures.

Percentage-Based Commissions

The affiliate receives a percentage of qualifying sales revenue.

For example, a 5% commission on a $200 eligible sale produces a gross commission of $10.

Fixed Commissions

Some programs pay a fixed amount for each qualifying conversion.

For example, a fixed $15 commission across 20 approved conversions produces $300.

Our current calculator is designed for percentage-based sales commissions. It should not be used as a fixed-per-conversion calculator without adapting the inputs and formula.

What Affects Your Actual Affiliate Earnings?

Commission Rate

The agreed commission percentage directly affects calculated gross earnings. Rates may vary by product, customer type, campaign, or contract.

Eligible Order Value

Programs may exclude taxes, shipping charges, discounts, or particular products from commissionable revenue.

Enter the value eligible for commission, not necessarily the full amount paid by the customer.

Returns and Cancellations

Returned or canceled orders can reduce approved commission. The exact treatment depends on program terms.

Conversion Approval

A tracked conversion is not always an approved conversion. Programs may review transactions before making commissions payable.

Marketing Expenses

Higher advertising or operating costs can reduce the amount remaining from affiliate commissions, even when gross revenue increases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Calculate a 10% Affiliate Commission?

Multiply eligible sales revenue by 0.10. For example, a qualifying $500 sale generates a calculated $50 gross commission at a 10% rate.

Can Affiliate Commission Be Negative?

Gross percentage-based commission is generally nonnegative for nonnegative eligible sales and commission rates. However, the amount remaining after expenses can be negative when those expenses exceed commission earned.

Are Returned Orders Included?

Not in this calculator’s eligible sales calculation. The entered number of returned or ineligible orders is deducted from total orders before calculating commission.

Does the Calculator Include Taxes?

No. The result after expenses is before taxes and excludes any costs or deductions that the user has not entered.

Does Every Affiliate Program Pay the Same Rate?

No. Commission structures and qualifying transaction rules vary by affiliate program and agreement. Use the rate applicable to your own transactions.

Calculation Methodology and Sources

Calculation model: Percentage-based commission on eligible order revenue, less user-entered expenses.

Currency: US dollars (USD).

Assumptions: All entered orders have the same commissionable sale amount and commission percentage. Returned or ineligible orders are excluded entirely.

Limitations: No automatic processing of partial refunds, mixed commission rates, tax liabilities, payment thresholds, or currency conversion. The calculated amount is not a confirmed affiliate payout.
