Compare salaries between U.S. states using occupational wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Select an occupation and two states to see average annual wages, monthly gross equivalents, and the dollar and percentage differences.

Our free salary comparison tool uses the same occupation code and reporting period for both states to provide a consistent comparison. Results reflect gross average wages and do not account for taxes, living costs, or individual experience.

Compare Salaries Between Two States

Compare the same SOC occupation using the same BLS reporting period. Differences are not adjusted for taxes or cost of living.

How Does the Salary Comparison Tool Work?

Our salary comparison tool uses occupational wage data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program.

Select an occupation and two U.S. states to compare mean annual wages, monthly gross earnings, and differences in pay. Both results use the same occupation code and reporting period to ensure a consistent comparison.

Salary Comparison Example: Texas vs Florida

According to the imported May 2025 BLS OEWS data, electricians (SOC 47-2111) have a mean annual wage of $59,280 in Texas and $57,660 in Florida.

Salary Data Texas Florida
Mean Annual Wage $59,280 $57,660
Monthly Gross Equivalent $4,940 $4,805
Reporting Period May 2025 May 2025

How Is the Salary Difference Calculated?

Subtract the second state’s mean annual wage from the first state’s mean annual wage.

Annual difference: $59,280 – $57,660 = $1,620.

Percentage difference: ($1,620 / $57,660) × 100 = 2.81%.

In this example, the reported mean annual wage for electricians in Texas is approximately 2.81% higher than in Florida.

Does a Higher Salary Mean Better Purchasing Power?

Not necessarily. A higher average wage does not automatically mean greater purchasing power. Housing expenses, transportation, taxes, healthcare costs, and other living expenses can differ between states and cities.

This calculator compares gross occupational wages. It does not adjust results for cost of living, inflation, individual tax obligations, or differences in work experience.

Are Salary Comparison Results Exact?

The figures are published statistical estimates for the selected occupation, state, and reporting period. They are not guaranteed earnings for individual workers.

Actual compensation can vary by employer, experience, location, industry, and employment conditions. The tool displays mean wages rather than median wages or take-home income.
