How Does the US Salary Calculator Work?

Our salary calculator retrieves occupational wage estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) dataset for May 2025.

After selecting an occupation and state, you can view the reported mean annual wage, mean hourly wage, estimated employment, and occupation code.

How Is Monthly Salary Calculated?

The monthly gross equivalent is calculated by dividing the mean annual wage by 12.

For example, the imported May 2025 BLS record for electricians in California reports a mean annual wage of $85,860. Dividing that amount by 12 gives a monthly gross equivalent of $7,155.

Are These Salaries Before or After Taxes?

These are gross statistical wage estimates before individual tax deductions. Actual take-home pay depends on applicable taxes, benefits, employment arrangements, and other personal circumstances.

Is the Average Salary the Same as the Median Salary?

No. The mean is calculated from the average of reported wages, while the median represents the midpoint of the wage distribution. This calculator displays mean wage estimates and does not present them as median earnings.
